Forest therapy has been scientifically proven to increase the parasympathetic nervous system (the body's "rest and digest" response). Forest therapy encourages this response by engaging with the senses - sight, sound, smell, touch, taste, proprioception (an awareness of the body), interoception (ability to feel sensations in the body), imaginal (relating to imagination and imagery) and finally, mirroring (subconsciously imitates another with gestures and speech patterns). An indirect pathway to decreasing the sympathetic nervous system (the body's "fight or flight" response) is the reduction of air, noise, heat and light pollution.

More than just a walk
Forest therapy contributes to lower stress levels by reducing cortisol and adrenaline, and lowering heart rate and blood pressure. Inhaling phytoncides (microbial organic compounds emitted by trees) increases "natural killer" (NK) cells, which help defend against illnesses and tumours. Regular exposure is associated with lower blood pressure and improved heart rate variability. Forest therapy can restore concentration and attention capacity, decrease anxiety, depression, and anger while increasing feelings of joy, contentment and increase cognitive function.
